Which Area of St Lucia is Best?

Castries is St Lucia’s capital city and is a beautiful start to your vacation on the Island – the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception is particularly worth a visit. The island is split into two halves. Northern St. Lucia is home to a number of small towns and the Pigeon Island National Park.

Pigeon Island’s history dates back to the 1550s but it didn’t achieve national park status until 1979. The park contains walking paths, ruins, and even an old fortress complete with cannons – it goes without saying that it also has some fabulous views.

Southern St Lucia also has a number of towns to investigate but it has something a little more special – waterfalls. In particular the Pitons Waterfall at Malgretout stands out because not only are they beautiful, you are also allowed to shower in its warm volcanic water. This is not the famous waterfall from the Superman II movie.

The nearby Diamond Botanical Gardens played home to the scene where Superman picked the orchid for Lois! This area also has sulphur springs that are worth a visit although if you want to walk through them you must take a guide with you.

If you’re looking for something a little more adventurous, the Jalousie Plantation is the place to go. It offers some great hikes, including one that takes you along a ridge overlooking the Caribbean Sea and another that takes you through the rainforest.

Both are sure to take your breath away! The area around Soufriere also has some great horseback riding and zip-lining options. You can also take a boat ride to nearby Martinique, St. Lucia’s French-speaking sister island, for a day of sightseeing or watersports.
